Creating value for our customers, but also for society in general, is our foremost mission. To make a difference. Here, we have gathered twelve images and stories on the theme Making a Difference. Stories about how we deliver business critical quality and innovations, work for safety and zero accidents and strive to reduce our environmental impact. That is what will make the real difference in the long run. Taking responsibility and creating lasting value.

“It’s easy to make a buck. It’s a lot tougher to make a difference”
Tom Brokaw (b. 1940), American TV journalist and author

Driving a Volvo truck makes a difference. It makes you part of a global community that shares a vision of sustainable transport solutions. You are one of the professionals who do not compromise with safety, performance, efficiency or productivity.

Quality is a core value for the Volvo Trucks brand. It is a value that we live by. We like to think that it makes a difference. You often hear that quality is a vague and shop-worn concept. We disagree.

Volvo owners experience quality. They get a truck that offers unmatched uptime and low cost of ownership. A truck full of state-of-the-art engineering for high efficiency and acclaimed environmental performance. To a great extent, quality is about trust. Quality is business critical.

For Volvo drivers, quality has a distinctive meaning. The driver’s workplace is more comfortable, ergonomic and efficient in a Volvo truck, which makes a driver more productive and enhances work satisfaction. And we aim to make a Volvo truck safer than any other truck. In fact, Volvo has a zero vision for safety: “Zero accidents with Volvo Group products.”

As the leading truck brand in the world, Volvo has an impact on people’s lives far beyond traffic and goods flows. More than ever, companies that realize they are part of the problem have to take action to be part of the solution. Which is why we take pride in our research of alternative fuels, our development towards carbon-neutral production plants, our holistic approach to reducing the environmental impact of our operations. In the long run, this is what will make the real difference. It is all about creating lasting value and taking responsibility. The bigger you are, the more crucial it becomes.

It comes down to people and how they make a difference in their own different ways. Take a driver like Fredrik, who takes as much pride in his professionalism as in his flashy red customized truck. The service levels he delivers make a difference. In turn, he depends on other people to make a difference supporting him – the Volvo engineers, innovators, and service technicians who go about their work with passion and energy. The extra effort always counts.

For the production of these stories, the project team has travelled to the humid depths of the rainforest in Borneo and the snow-crested peaks of the Swiss Alps to see how Volvo trucks make a difference. This is what the twelve stories aim to tell you. How Volvo innovations boost productivity and fuel efficiency, or lead the way to sustainable transport solutions. How businesses rely on proven Volvo technology and excellent service.

Take it from the world’s only truly global truck brand: the same things make the difference in Russia as in California or South Korea. Enjoy the stories.

Quality

Trust is our business Some say quality is meeting the needs and expectations of customers. Which implies that adequacy is enough. At Volvo, we see quality differently. Quality is when something is fine-tuned to its purpose. It boils down to trust – reliability proven over and over. It is the joy of smooth, trouble-free operation: durability, unrelenting function, and strength when you need it – all the characteristics of a workhorse.

Uptime

Non-stop operations A fleet of 200 Volvo FMX trucks carries out shuttle service between the Borneo mining operations and the harbour. They run 22 hours out of 24 in the extreme tropical rainforest climate. This is no ordinary uptime. Normal day temperature is 30°C and relative air humidity is more than 80%. Rainfall can exceed 4,000 mm/year locally, which takes a toll on road conditions. Volvo FMX trucks are built to endure this. They deliver.

Piece Of Art

Looking good Fredrik’s red Volvo FH truck has served him for 400,000 km (250,000 miles). And it’s not just a truck. It’s a piece of art, too. The customization and motif paint job cost the equivalent of half a truck. Fredrik runs an operation of eight vehicles and keeps buying Volvo for the uptime, the unmatched service and the fact that the team at the Volvo Truck Center understands his business. Now the time has come to take delivery of a brand new generation Volvo FH. But the red truck will not be traded in.

Global Presence

A fruitful effort A Volvo truck at work in Bahia, Brazil. The vast fruit plantations in Latin America depend on high-efficiency truck fleets. Trucks make the world go around, they keep the agricultural value chain together, making trade happen. Volvo Trucks has been present in Brazil since the 1930s. Today, Volvo trucks made in Curitiba are a Brazilian success story, with rising sales numbers boosted by extensive infrastructure investments.

Safety

Let it shine At Volvo, safety is always the first priority. Ever since the start in 1927, Volvo has launched more safety features and registered more safety patents than any other brand in the automotive industry. Our goal is to offer the world’s safest truck. We set the standards. We celebrate safety and lead the development. In fact, you could say that we own the word safety. Who else in this world could groom a collision test vehicle to be the jewel of a showroom? Volvo can.

Reliability

Precision work Emirates Flight Cargo is the company that supplies the meals for Emirates airlines. For efficient deliveries to the Airbus A380, Volvo together with the customer and a local dealer has customized a fleet of FLs and FEs, fitting them with hydraulic-lift cargo holds that can reach the loading hatch 12 metres up. This is to ensure maximum uptime and accurate service in very narrow time windows. Today, the company delivers 130,000 meals a day and the plan is to grow to 200,000 meals.

Customer Focus

Maiden voyage Ricard Fritz, Senior Vice President Volvo Trucks Global Brand, oversees the delivery of a new Volvo FH16. The owner Kjell-Ove Gustavsson is immediately pleased with the superior road handling of his new timber truck. This benefit is a result of an entirely new chassis concept, Fritz explains. The topics of the day focus mostly on safety enhancements such as improved visibility, upgraded driver ergonomics and the unique sky window that doubles as an emergency exit.

Leadership

Proven technology En route to a construction site on California’s Highway 1. Volvo is technology leader and the world’s largest manufacturer of diesel engines. Volvo engines are currently in use in hundreds of thousands of heavy-duty applications, including trucks, buses, construction equipment, and electrical generation as well as in a great number of specialized industrial and marine applications. To say they are well proven is an understatement. Volvo owners all over the world benefit from the unmatched fuel efficiency and performance of these engines.

Makingthe
difference

Environment

Climate-smart innovations The Volvo D13K460 is the first diesel engine to comply with Euro 6, the new, stringent European emission standard. What is more, the engine achieves a reduction of NOx and particles while also maintaining full engine output. In parallel, Volvo engineers’ search for new viable alternative fuel sources continues – a never-ending struggle to improve environmental performance and to aim for true sustainability. There is no rest for a market leader – future-proofing means being two steps ahead at all times.

difference

Innovations

Admiration for hi-tech This is the EXPO 2012 center in Yeosu, South Korea, where a Volvo truck’s dashboard is projected on the world’s biggest led screen, 30×218 metres. The screen is a typical symbol for dynamic South Korea, the new asian leader in young fashion, k-pop, electronics, telecom, cars and supertankers. Volvo is the market-leading truck brand in South Korea. Innovations and technology leadership make the difference; that is what rates especially high here.

Sustainability

A better world In the UK, quality goods retailer Marks & Spencer launched Europe’s most ambitious environmental program (Plan A) in 2007. It covers 100 commitments to address key social and environmental challenges. In fact, the Plan A initiative spans everything they do. From accounts of the carbon footprint of every single product on their shelves to the choice of vehicles in their truck fleets. Volvo trucks qualify.

I-See

Elephant´s memory The St Gotthard pass offers the best connection between Zürich and Lugano. The elevation (2,106 m), breathtaking gorges and general inaccessibility have given birth to tales and legends of the pass through the centuries. Travelling the pass, through hairpins and steep slopes, is demanding driving. This is where I-See comes into its own. The electronics of Dynafleet, engine, gearbox and GPS work in unison to memorize any given route. I-See uses this information to control gear shifts, revs, speeds and braking to optimize fuel efficiency for the next journey.
